Crafitti and Russian Culture and Science Centre Workshop at Delhi, May 6, 2009 - A Report

Workshop on Innovation and Patents Using Russian Theory of Inventive Problem-solving

RCSC together with Crafitti Consulting Private Limited, Bangalore, organized a unique Workshop on Inventions, Innovations and Patents using a relatively lesser known Russian Methodology named Teoriya Resheniya Izobreatatelskikh Zadatch or Theory of Inventive Problem- Solving (TRIZ) . Mr. Navneet Bhushan, Founder-Director of Crafitti Consulting, using the multi-media presentation, highlighted different theoretical and practical aspects of TRIZ. He has immense experience in the fields of defence research, information technology, intellectual property and management research. He is a leading expert, research and consultant on innovation management and has built a variety of frameworks, methodologies and techniques to craft innovation in business and technology contexts.
Crafitti Consulting is an innovative consulting firm in the business, science and technology space. The participants of the Workshop comprised patent experts, patent lawyers, IP heads, scientists, inventors, engineers, engineering managers, R&D heads, researchers, product managers, business managers, etc.

The delegates were exposed to understanding the level of an invention and a patent, finding out the key contradictions the invention is solving, looking at the claims hierarchy of the patent, function diagrams of a patent/invention, pruning or trimming as a means of inventing, system complexity estimation, etc. These techniques will help in finding technological alternatives to a patent, writing future-proof claims of a patent, understanding the evolution of an invention compared to prior art, finding white space in a field to leverage, etc.

Genrich Altshuller, a former Soviet navel patent officer after World War II started a systematic study of patents, his aim was to find out what makes a successful invention. His search led him to develop a unique methodology called TRIZ. In the process, he also developed a methodology to analyze and study patents. Crafitti Consulting has developed on the TRIZ way of doing patent analysis and reinforced it with other techniques to build a comprehensive framework for inventions and innovations. For the first time, this framework is offered in India.

Crafitti Services - Design Of Strategy (DOS)

Greek origins of the word strategy point to "putting the troops in the right places". As opposed to purely imaginative future-gazing, strategy requires one to start with both feet on the ground, climb up a tree to get to a higher vantage point, look around, generate new potential directions and then come back to the ground to work out ways and means to move along those directions.

We, at Crafitti Consulting, have had the opportunity to work as troops, generals and advisors in various innovation contexts in different organizations. We have, over the years, researched, experimented with and built several frameworks, methodologies and tools to facilitate innovation in these contexts.

Crafitti's Design Of Strategy (DoS) framework stitches together powerful elements of innovative thinking specifically suited to strategy creation. The macro-elements of DoS are as follows:

1. Understanding the context
Elements of value engineering and systems thinking are used to capture the current needs, functions, structure and behavior of the entity or system in question (organization, team, product etc.). Past and current aspirations are understood, indicators of recent momentum or change are noted (where have we reached, how have we reached and what's the current mood) and perceived opportunities and challenges are listed.

2. Expanding the context
As the first real step towards strategic thinking, the context defined and described in the previous step is expanded along multiple directions. Value Engineering (Value Net, Value Stream) and Systems Thinking (TRIZ, Dependency Structure Matrices (DSM), Mind Maps, Vedic Principles) elements are extensively used. Interesting new directions are marked.

3. Scenario building
This section flows from the previous section into the next. Scenarios are are identified and created from the expanded context. The scenarios start with "known" data and quickly meander into the "unknown" - multiple new futures are explored. While the exploration further expands the context, new directions also start to simultaneously emerge.

4. Creating new directions
Elements of inventive thinking (TRIZ principles, Use of resources, constraints and contradictions, laws of evolution, Vedic principles) are used to generate new thought directions and to build on the scenarios from the previous section. New needs, functions, structure and behavior are articulated.

5. Selecting key directions
Relevant criteria are identified from the expanded context - the criteria reflect expected changes in momentum identified during the course of the exercise. Strategic directions from the previous step are evaluated with respect to the criteria and relatively prioritized using multi-criteria decision making techniques like the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP).

6. Charting road maps
The most promising and relevant directions are articulated in time and space. Elements of Lean Thinking (Takt Time, Set-based Concurrent Engineering (SBCE)) are used to chart road maps to implement the devised strategy.

Technological Alternatives Study (TAS) on a Patent - A Unique Service from Crafitti Consulting

Crafitti Consulting brings to the world a unique service on finding Technological Alternatives to an invention/patent. This service can be used to grow the invention into multiple directions which even the original inventor might find extremely useful, as the process helps him/her invent faster.

Objectives and Process

The objective of a Technological Alternative Study (TAS) is to analyze a given Patent and explore various ways in which the invention described in the patent can be transformed to next levels in its evolution. Crafitti Consulting Private Limited (http://www.crafitti.com) uses the methodology of TRIZ and own propriety techniques to help domain experts generate technological alternatives to a patent. There are four main phases of this study and it is always carried out with the domain experts from client organization.

Phase I: Patent study and analysis
A comprehensive search for Patents and other documents in and around the patent is carried out. This involves study of forward and backward citations of the patent as well as other state of the art documents. The patent of interest is studied comprehensively and analyzed to find key contradictions identified or solved by the patent. This phase also provides a mapping of patent on 8 the laws and lines of evolution defined by TRIZ. A claims hierarchy provides the independent and dependent claims to study the protection given in the patent. A detailed report including contradictions, claims hierarchy, lines of evolution mapping and list of documents for current relevant art is also presented.

Phase II: Preliminary ideation
Based on the analysis of patent and current state of art, preliminary first level ideation is conducted in house or in collaboration with the client domain experts. In this process, TRIZ Inventive Principles, Lines of system evolution and system complexity estimator is used to generate possible ideas to transform and develop the invention towards a more ideal system.

Phase III: Collective brainstorm in a workshop setting
Based on analysis report and preliminary ideation report, a solution generation brainstorm is conducted in a workshop setting. This involves usage of all tools and information generated during previous phases of the study.

Phase IV: Solution evaluation and final report submission
Using the methodology of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) solution directions are rank ordered and a final report is submitted which list solutions that are closer to ideality.
